Workshop Instructors

Robert Haley ~ Workshop Director, co-founder

Robert Haley is the owner of Classic Winds, and has offered private instruction to students of all levels since 1979. Mr. Haley holds the Bachelor of Music Education and Master of Music in Woodwind Performance degrees from the University of Georgia and has been instructor of saxophone at Georgia State University in Atlanta. Solo (recital and concerto) and chamber music performances have taken him all over the country, including a performance by special invitation of the legendary saxophonist Sigurd Rascher, at Rascher's last North American workshop at Yale University.

Michael Jarrell ~ Chamber music, ensemble

Michael Jarrell is a former student of Mr. Robert Haley, a former Governor’s Honors Program participant, and a Hugh Hodgson School of Music graduate from the University of Georgia. While there, he studied saxophone under the direction of Dr. Connie Frigo.

He was apart of multiple quartets throughout the years which led to featured performances at Janfest, Composition Recitals, and at a Navy Saxophone Symposium in Washington D.C. His saxophone training also took him through many saxophone ensembles and various small ensembles. The Jazz Program at the Hugh allowed Michael to study privately with David Dangelo and in big band and jazz combo settings. Throughout all of this he has been teaching four years through band camps, sectionals, and private lessons.

Michael helped to create and write music for a jazz combo called Play On Six. Since their creation, they have performed many shows around Athens and are branching out towards Atlanta and its greater areas. They were able to record an album and secure a monthly residency at Hendershot’s in Athens before the virus really caught in the US.

Most recently Michael won a spot in the Regional Army Bands. He will be stationed with the 82 nd Airborne at Fort Bragg in North Carolina for the coming three years. He will continue to pursue performing, teaching, and composing in his private life as well as within the Military.
