Baritone Neck and Crook
Buescher Big B Baritone Neck Assembly Repair
A customer brought in a gifted Big B baritone saxophone for an overhaul. The instrument had been nicely relacquered, but the top crook had suffered damage. It had been flattened, solder joints broken, tone holes deformed, and it had lacquer wear.
To do this repair correctly, the top crook had to be unsoldered from the instrument, then separated into its component parts. The dents were removed from the upper and lower sections, and the proper roundness was restored to the long portion of the tube. Special care was taken to re-round the sections that needed to fit together seamlessly. Tone holes were raised and dressed to provide a flat surface for pad seating. Finally, the crook was test fitted and resoldered back onto the main body of the saxophone, followed by a new coat of lacquer to maintain the finish.
The neck had an extension soldered onto the end. This is a common practice if a player wants to use a small chamber mouthpiece on the old instrument. The extension was removed, and the neck restored to its original length and dimensions.
